Battersea has three very different kinds of homes, often within a few streets of each other. There are the Victorian family houses between Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common, the Edwardian mansion flats along Prince of Wales Drive and around Battersea Park, and the new-build apartments of Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station. Each needs a different approach, and a good painter and decorator in Battersea knows which one they’re walking into before they open a tin.

Our decorators are employed directly by us, not subcontracted, and work alongside our own plasterers, carpenters, plumbers and electricians. If preparation uncovers cracked plaster, a rotten sill or a door that won’t close, we put it right before we paint. You deal with one company from the site visit to the final walk-round.

Every job starts with a free site visit and a fixed, itemised quote. All labour carries a 12-month workmanship guarantee, and we leave rooms clean and usable at the end of each day. Call  020 7129 7418

The streets around Northcote Road, Clapham Junction and the Shaftesbury Park Estate are lined with Victorian terraces, many with loft conversions and kitchen extensions added over the years. These houses work hard: hallways and stairs take knocks from buggies and bikes, and children’s rooms get redecorated every few years. We use tougher, scrubbable finishes where they’re needed, matt where they look best, and we decorate new lofts and extensions to match the original rooms so there’s no visible line between old and new.

The red brick mansion blocks of Prince of Wales Drive and the streets around Battersea Park have high ceilings, deep cornicing, picture rails and large sash windows. Ceilings over three metres need proper access equipment and careful cutting in, and the original plasterwork needs cleaning and filling rather than another heavy layer of paint. We protect shared staircases and lifts while we work, and keep the noise and dust to your flat.

New-build flats bring their own rules. Most developments ask contractors for an insurance certificate and method statement, a booked service lift and loading bay, and work within set hours. We handle all of that with the managing agent. The decorating itself is different too: new buildings settle in their first years, which opens hairline cracks at plasterboard joints, ceiling edges and around door frames. We cut out, fill and sand these properly before repainting, so they don’t reappear a month later.

Battersea has a large lettings market, and every empty week costs rent. We turn most one- and two-bedroom flats around within a week, using hard-wearing, wipeable finishes in a neutral palette that photographs well. Small repairs found during preparation, such as a loose handle, a dripping tap or a damaged skirting, can be fixed by our in-house trades in the same visit, and we send photos of the finished rooms for the inventory.

We decorate entrance halls, stairwells and landings in mansion blocks and converted houses for managing agents, freeholders and residents’ associations. We work in sections so residents can always get through, use low-odour paints in enclosed spaces, and can work early mornings or weekends where the block needs it.

We repaint painted bay fronts, window surrounds, sills, porches, front doors and railings on Battersea houses. Cracked render is cut out and filled, rust on railings is treated before priming, and rotten sills are repaired before painting rather than hidden under it. We use breathable masonry paint on old render and stucco, and arrange any scaffold or tower licence with Wandsworth Council.

Flat entrance doors, and many internal doors in converted and new-build flats, are fire doors. Their intumescent strips and smoke seals must never be painted over, because paint stops them expanding in a fire. We mask the seals, use paint suitable for fire doors, and check the door still closes fully onto its frame.

Original lime plaster in Victorian and Edwardian homes needs breathable, lime-compatible paint, because vinyl emulsion traps moisture and blisters within a year or two. New plasterboard needs a mist coat before any finish coat. Bare timber gets an oil-based primer, and all joinery is finished by brush. We check every surface before deciding what goes on it.

We keep running beads and parting beads free of paint and paint sashes in stages, so every window slides when we leave. Our carpenters can ease sticking sashes and replace broken cords at the same visit.

Older joinery and railings often carry lead paint from before the 1960s. We never dry-sand or burn it off. We use wet abrasion, dust sheeting and safe disposal instead.

These are starting prices, excluding VAT. Your fixed quote depends on the condition of the surfaces, ceiling heights, access and the finishes you choose. Every quote is itemised after a free site visit.

• Single room: from £650 + VAT

• Period room with cornicing and original joinery: from £850 + VAT

• Hallway, stairs and landing: from £1,400 + VAT

• Between-tenancy redecoration, 1-bed flat: from £1,200 + VAT

• Between-tenancy redecoration, 2-bed flat: from £1,800 + VAT

• Between-tenancy redecoration, 3-bed: from £2,500 + VAT

• Exterior front repaint (bays, sills, door, railings): from £2,200 + VAT

• Pre-sale decoration: from £2,500 + VAT

• Full Victorian house: from £12,000 + VAT

• Communal halls and stairwells: priced after site visit + VAT

Prices include preparation, primers, two finish coats, protection and clearing up each day. We can supply trade or premium paint, including Farrow & Ball and Little Greene, or use paint you have chosen.

How We Work

1. Free site visit. We look at each room, check the plaster and old paint, and, for flats, check the building’s rules for contractors.

2. Fixed, itemised quote. You get a written price and timescale with no surprise extras.

3. Paperwork. For flats and new-builds, we send insurance and method statements to the managing agent and book lifts and parking.

4. Protection and preparation. Floors, furniture and shared areas are covered, then we fill, sand, repair and prime.

5. Painting. Two finish coats as standard, cut in by hand and brush-finished on joinery.

6. Final walk-round. We check every room with you and put right anything you are not happy with.

FAQ: Have Questions?

Painter and Decorator Fulham: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a painter and decorator in Battersea cost?

A single room starts from £650 + VAT, and a period room with cornicing and original joinery starts from £850 + VAT. Between-tenancy redecoration starts from £1,200 for a one-bed flat and a full Victorian house from £12,000. We provide a fixed, itemised quote after a free site visit.

Yes. We work within the building’s rules: we send the managing agent our insurance certificate and method statement, book the service lift and loading bay, and keep to permitted working hours. New-build flats often show hairline cracks at joints and corners after the first year as the building settles, and we fill, sand and repaint these so they don’t return straight away.

Yes, carefully. Fire doors in purpose-built and converted flats have intumescent strips and smoke seals that must never be painted over, because paint stops them working. We mask the seals, use paint suitable for fire doors, and leave the door closing properly onto its frame.

Yes. We decorate entrance halls, stairwells and landings in mansion blocks and converted houses for managing agents, freeholders and residents’ associations. We work in sections so residents can always get in and out, and we can work outside normal hours where the block requires it.

Most one- and two-bedroom flats in Battersea are turned around within a week, often in three to five working days. We use hard-wearing, wipeable finishes, fix small repairs found during preparation, and photograph the finished rooms for your inventory.

Repainting a surface that is already painted, in a similar colour, rarely needs permission. Painting brickwork that has never been painted can need planning permission in a conservation area, such as the Shaftesbury Park Estate or the Battersea Park area, and listed buildings need Listed Building Consent for most colour changes. We check with Wandsworth Council’s rules before quoting.

Paint applied before the 1960s often contains lead, especially on original joinery, sash windows and railings. We never dry-sand or burn off paint that may contain lead. We use wet abrasion, dust control and safe disposal instead.
